Thomas Swinkels wijst ons met Wardian Cage op de gelijkenissen tussen hedendaagse transportcontainers en 19de-eeuwse mobiele terraria, die werden gebruikt voor de bescherming van buitenlandse planten, vaak invasieve exoten, die overzee naar Europa werden gebracht. Met Wardian Cage reflecteert hij op deze invasieve infrastructuur, die een direct gevolg is van processen van kolonialisme en imperialisme. Thomas Swinkels followed his interest in the life course of the Japanese Knotweed. Von Siebold took this very proliferating plant to Leiden around 1830. Swinkels came across the similarities between contemporary transport containers and 19th-century so-called Wardian cases; mobile terrariums used to protect foreign plants brought to Europe overseas. The Wardian case forever changed the botanical makeup of the world's flora. With Wardian Cage, Swinkels reflects on this invasive infrastructure, which is a direct result of processes of colonialism and imperialism.
